I want to work for Skype!

The best part about Skype is being able to see the people you love even though you are hundreds (or thousands) of miles apart — oh, and it's free! Here are some screenshots of yesterday's calls.

What did you do this Christmas?

Yeah, yeah. I had to work ... which is where I am right now, waiting for the story about the terrorist attack on a Northwest flight from the Netherlands to Detroit to develop. I know it's not the least bit funny, but man, there are so many jokes in that! The third Austin Powers movie, "Goldmember," comes to mind immediately ... but I digress.

I spent my morning talking to and SEEING my family back home via Skype (fantastic thing that. If you don't already have it, download it. It's free). I watched Jordyn and Mackensey open the presents Chris and I sent, listened to them tell me what Santa brought them and actually got to see Mumsy for the first time this year! No kidding. I hadn't actually seen her since last Christmas — that's why she wasn't in my video.

I also got to talk to (and, again via Skype, see) Dad and Susan. This family has gone high tech! Tracy was telling me earlier today that she and David were poised to capture all the Christmas joy when the girls saw what Santa brought them. Each with a video recorder of some sort, David set up in the living room as Tracy interviewed the girls in the bedroom ("Are you excited?" she asked). Then when he was ready, David shouted the all clear and recorded their reactions as the entered the room while Tracy followed and shot from a different angle. I cannot wait to see the movie that comes out of all that footage. Seems to me that if David wanted to give up the death biz, he could certainly find a career for himself in film-making.

I had ended this blog post a bit differently about an hour ago, talking about the good mood everyone was in at work and how helpful we all were with each other (misery loves company and all that), but then a miracle happened — a Christmas miracle if you will — and I was let out an hour and a half earlier than I was scheduled to work tonight. So even though I wish I could have been home again this year, being able to see and hear — and therefore feeling almost a part of — my family's celebration, coupled with the kindness of my wonderful colleagues throughout the day and night, it turned out to be a very nice Christmas after all.

Once again, Merry Christmas to you and yours.

With love,
Joanne

That's right, I'm a slacker. Falling down on the job again. I should be shot. Or, maybe I just need a shot — or several. Hey, it's been a rough year folks, made rougher by the fact that I won't be seeing some of you, as is usually the case, this holiday season (except maybe through Skype that is).

But I'm not here to bemoan the year I've had. Instead, I'm here to share the highlights — after all, there's always a silver lining right? Attached to this post you will (hopefully) see a video. I've compiled some of my favorite photos — not necessarily my best photos, but ones that remind me of good times. A few might even be blurry, I'm sure that has nothing to do with me being blurry at the time. No, that surely could not be the reason.

If you looked through my collection of photos from 2009, it would probably take you a good two days — that's what it took me to whittle it down to what you'll see here. I literally take tens of thousands of pictures every year. I once asked a friend to guess how many photos I had taken while on a week-long vacation. Their answer? 200. And he was serious. Seriously wrong! I took over 4000. Another friend broke it down for me this way: If I never slept, nor ate, no took a single break, I'd have averaged a shot every 2.8 minutes during my eight day trip. To top that, I went on a shorter trip two months later (five days total) and took about the same amount.

Okay, so I'm crazy, but imagine what it cost me when I was still using film! I think I single-handedly put that guy on River Road in Fair Lawn, N.J. out of business when I went digital. Anyway, so when I look back on the photos I've taken, especially of (my nieces) Jordyn and Mackensey, it reminds me of all the wonderful things in my life — the people I love, the places I've been and the fun that comes with spending time with great friends and family.

Chris and I would like to wish you all a joyous Christmas, prosperous New Year and most of all, much happiness and good health.

Slainte mhath,
Joanne

Let it Snow, Let it Snow...

Apparently it's snowing up in the north! It's gloomy down here in Atlanta, but no white stuff to be seen. "They" say it may snow on Christmas Day. I'll believe it when I see it ... I mean, "they" can't even get tomorrow's forecast correct!

Sure would be purdy though! ;0)
